As a new parent you have to make decisions which are crucial for the well-being of your baby and health for your baby.

Lots of new-age parents have now resorted to disposable diapers as they are easy-to-use and convenient. But they don’t come without their list of problems and dangers. Here is a list of reasons why using disposable diapers is not such a good idea: -

1. Diapers May Cause Allergic Reactions

A babies’ skin is extremely delicate and very easily affected by irritating factors. Signs of diaper allergy are pain, skin damage, scars or skin blisters in the areas which come in contact with a diaper, which may, in the longer run, affect children's activities and development. The chemicals used in production of diapers may be harmful and may contain chemicals that can easily damage the sensitive skin of infants.

2. It May Cause Skin Rashes

Diaper rash is a common condition that can make a baby’s skin sore, red, scaly and sensitive. Diapers that are left on for too long, or the diaper itself rubbing against the skin can irritate the soft skin of a baby.

3. Increased Chances of Infection

Urinary Tract Infections are more common in infant girls who wear super-absorbent diapers. Also, dirty diapers can increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in babies. When a baby has a dirty diaper, bacteria from their skin or poop can get into their urinary tract and multiply.

4. Difficulty in Toilet Training

Diapers can make it harder to toilet train infants as it makes it hard for babies to recognize when they are wet. Children become comfortable with diapers and prefer them over unfamiliar toilet. It also becomes learned behaviour as older children might learn to ignore body signals and become used to wearing soiled diapers.

5. Diapers are Not Environment-friendly

A baby will go through about 3000 diapers just in their first year. It takes around 500 years for single use diapers to decompose. They are often made from synthetic chemicals and plastic that can take hundred of years to break down. They are often thrown out with baby’s waste, making it even harder to recycle.

Alternatives to Diapers

Diapers are definitely convenient, comfortable for both mom and baby, and also travel-friendly; but at the end of the day, they are still plastic!

If you are a conscientious parent and care for the environment and your child’s health, then here are a few alternatives which you may try instead of single-use/ disposable diapers.

1. Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are considered a safer and and eco-friendlier option than disposable diapers due to their reusability. They can be washed and used multiple times, reducing the amount of non-biodegradable waste that may be generated otherwise. Cloth diapers are also cost effective in the longer run and make it easier to potty-train infants later on.

2. Diaper Liners

These are extra pieces of materials placed between cloth diapers and a baby’s bottom. Reusable liners can be washed and reused and also act as a barrier to keep a baby’s skin dry. They also make clean-up easier for the care-giver and prevents stains on cloth diapers.

3. Eco-friendly Disposable Diapers

Organic disposable diapers are made from plant-based materials, like bamboo, and are free from harmful chemicals, making them gentler on your baby’s skin. These diapers are eco-friendly and decompose faster than the traditional disposable diapers. However they are quite expensive and may cost you more each month when spending on diapers.

In a nutshell, disposable diapers and cloth diapers are better than their traditional counterparts as they are made from breathable materials which are less likely to irritate the skin, are more environment friendly, and are cheaper in the longer run.
