Uttarakhand is rich in forest area {64% of total area}, the primary source of traditional farmyard manure {leaf litter & 50-70% of livestock feed available from forests} & water resource upper catchment of snow- fed Ganga & more than 1000 mm annual rainfall, the key inputs for sustainable organic farming. Forest leaf litter is mostly used as bedding material in livestock sheds & courtyards & litter livestock excrete mixture as farmyard manure.

Opportunity factors

• Considerable promotional work by governmental and non-governmental organizations was considered the most important opportunity, followed by willingness to pay for safe organic food in nearby cities.

• Uttarakhand had a well-developed organic agriculture policy since the beginning of the state, which ultimately helped not only the UOCB (Uttarakhand Organic Commodity Board) initiative to create a well-developed government mechanism to promote organic agriculture, but also in turn. attracted a number of non-governmental organizations and private companies to participate in the total organic farming network.
